Tormented (2009) - Film Review

Jon Wright tried to achieve the almost impossible balance of horror and comedy in his 2009 British film TORMENTED. The result is not scary, and not particularly funny, but there was something about TORMENTED that kept me from switching off.

Preppy head girl Justine (Tuppence Middleton) speaks at the funeral of Darren Mullet. She doesn’t remember Mullet of course; he was just the big fat kid who all the ‘cool’ kids thought it was fun to bully. For Mullet of course, it wasn’t fun at all and it ultimately led to his suicide.

Thomas Alfredson’s 2008 vampire film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is strange. It isn’t so much a horror film as a coming of age drama which happens to have a vampire as one of its two leads. Stunningly beautiful, well written and perfectly executed LET THE RIGHT ONE IN won’t be well received by all horror fans, but as a film, it is a work of art.

The story first introduces us to Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) who is a pale and strange looking child; he is bullied at school and lives a lonely existence. He does not retaliate against his antagonists, but chooses to vent his frustration by attacking the tree in front of his house with a knife. It is during one of these violent, if harmless outbursts that he meets Eli (Lina Leandersson), another unusual 12 year old.

I do love a good ‘stalk ‘n’ slash’ film, so I had been looking forward to Stewart Hendler’s SORORITY ROW for some time. It’s shame that recent Hollywood attempts have not held the same charm as their 1980’s counterparts. Sorority Row whilst entertaining is no different from the other recent offerings.

The opening scene invites us to a party. The girls of Theta Pi are celebrating their final year by partying hard. There are girls having pillow fights in various stages of undress, drink, drugs and sex – the usual nonsense that we have come to expect from this kind of film.

High tension is the order of the day with 1989 thriller DEAD CALM. The film relies almost entirely on a cast of three, amazingly these three astounding actors keep the viewers in suspense and riveted to their seats for the full 93 minutes.

When John Ingram (Sam Neill) returns home from the Australian Navy, he is met with the crushing news of his young son’s death. His wife, Rae (Nicole Kidman) is left injured and mentally scarred from the accident in which they lost their son. In a bid to get away from it all and regain their strength, the couple set sail on their yacht ‘The Saracen’.

UNTRACEABLE begs a question: if you heard about a website that streamed live videos of torture and death, and the more people that watched, the more that death was hastened, Would curiosity get the better of you?

Widowed mother and FBI agent Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane) is an agent in the cyber crime division along with Griffin Dowd (Colin Hanks). Normally used to dealing with little more exciting than identity theft, they are horrified when they get a tip-off about KILLWITHME.COM a website streaming a live video of a kitten being tortured and killed. Return of the Living Dead (which I reviewed here) is not a bad film, it isn’t a particularly scary film, but it’s pretty entertaining - in the most part, because of its humour. Alas the sequel RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is not so entertaining.

Return of the Living Dead Part 2 is almost the same film as its predecessor; in fact it is trying so hard to be identical it’s ridiculous! James Karen and Thom Mathews return despite being killed in the first film!

I recently had the opportunity to talk to Rob Grant, writer/director of the brand new Zombie film YESTERDAY. I asked him about the trials and tribulations of working on such a small budget, and found out why the chemistry amongst the actors was so good…….

STALK ‘N’ SLASH: Had you always wanted to make a horror film, or did you just get up one day and say ‘let’s make a movie’?

ROB GRANT: Realistically I wanted to make all kinds of movies

Jason Todd achieves the almost unachievable in his 2006 Horror flick UNREST. As we all know mortuaries, or indeed any holding area for the deceased are pretty scary places. You would imagine it to be impossible to make these places anything less than blood-chilling. Jason Todd however, manages to achieve just that. There is nothing scary about this film, from start to finish it is quite simply the most mundane, plodding, fright-less horror move that I have ever seen.

The story, in a nutshell, is that pathology student Alison (Corri English), teams up with three other students in a gross anatomy class to dissect their allocated body. The body (or Cadaver, as people in the know would say) which is chosen for Alison and her team turns out to be a possessed prostitute who was on death

Federico Zampaglione’s stunning genre debut SHADOW was well received at Frightfest in August, and is due to be screened at Sitges which runs from 1st to 12th October. He’s now being heralded as Italy’s next master of horror, following in the footsteps of genre greats such as Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava. I was lucky enough to catch up with him for a quick interview:

STALK 'N' SLASH: Federico, you are best known for playing with your band TIROMANCINO, can you tell me what your fans think of your decision to make SHADOW?

FEDERICO ZAMPAGLIONE: I haven’t talked to them about my decision. I’m trying to keep my music career separate from directing horror flicks.

This film boasts in its tagline ‘Vampires! Voodoo! Vixens! Victims!’ and it's true, it has all of these things in abundance. However, the one thing the 1971 film THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD doesn’t have is blood – not a drop! Still, the title suckered me in, and no doubt, I’m not the first. Unfortunately, it isn’t just the lack of blood that’s disappointing, in THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD; the story is a letdown too.

It begins when Detective Inspector Holloway of Scotland Yard (John Bennett) goes to investigate the disappearance of an actor. He speaks to the letting agent of his house, Mr Stoker (John Bryans), who tells him that this is not the first time something strange has gone on in that house. Then he tells D.I. Holloway the four strange stories....

Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 Zombie film RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is cheesy to say the least. The acting is hammy, goofy, and just plain awful. The characters are over the top, and the story is ridiculous. There are so many laughs that it’s hardly scary at all – but my guess is, this is just how Dan O’Bannon wanted it. Thanks to a hilarious screenplay, this film actually works!

The opening statement of this film is that all events, and all people are real, and that what you are about to see, actually happened - it’s clear right away we can’t take anything about Return of the Living Dead seriously.

Whenever I find a Zombie film, I just can’t help myself, I have to buy it. Granted, this means I have spent a good few quid on films that are less than average, but over the years I’ve also found some real gems. Just like Forrest Gump’s chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get. Little did I know when I purchased ZOMBIE LAKE that I had categorically, unequivocally, and without doubt, found the World’s biggest stinker!

Rob Schmidt’s 2003 Film WRONG TURN has all of the ingredients needed for the average sick and twisted horror fan to feel well and truly satisfied; six attractive young people (2 of whom have no character and as such are totally dispensable), several mutant inbreds sporting a variety of very large items of cutlery, an over dramatic music score, plenty of suspense and the obligatory secluded cottage. I could so easily have seen it all before, but done with this much finesse it was a rare treat!

From the opening credits I knew that this film was a cut above the norm. As images of hideously disfigured creatures and missing people flashed before my eyes I was certain that the normally dormant dark-side of my nature was in for a feast!!

Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s multi-award winning 2007 film [REC] is shot point of view style, and was filmed in an actual apartment block. This is supposed to be realistic and terrifying. Alas, it is neither. I am surprised at how many good things I’ve heard about [Rec], and would happily throttle those responsible for encouraging me to waste 85 minutes of my life watching it. Your eyes do not deceive you, I did say 85 minutes, it would appear that even the film makers themselves felt that any longer than 85 minutes would be stretching our patience to the limit, and would ensure that not a solitary living soul would see the last five minutes. Given that this was the only good part, it was a sensible decision.

The DVD artwork on THE EYE was first-rate and after reading the synopsis I was curious enough to make my purchase. What a grave error of judgement that was! The film was eminently sluggish and was designed to startle rather than scare. In the end, I found it to be as dull as dish water, and not as interesting!

It’s not often that I see a film, particularly a horror film, which is lit as well as Steve Barker’s OUTPOST. Stunning greys and shadows are used to great effect, bleaching out the brighter colours and leaving behind a bleak and atmospheric work of art. Teeth (2007) - Film Review

A bizarre mix of genres, the horrifying, black comedy from Mitchell Lichenstein, TEETH, centres around the myth of Vaginal Dentata. Yeah, that’s right a vagina with teeth! It was always gonna be a bit silly, the question is can a silly film be both horrifying and entertaining? The answer, strangely enough, is yes.

Dawn (Jess Weixler) is chief spokesperson for the local chastity group, promising to stay pure until marriage. So unfamiliar is she with her own body that she doesn’t realise that she has a strange and dangerous mutation.

From the moment I heard that Tommy Wirkola’s 2009 release, DEAD SNOW had Nazi Zombies in it, I couldn’t wait to see it. That’s not all, it’s also filmed in the snow, imagine that! Blood, snow, and Nazi Zombies, just listen to those ingredients, it’s like a horror fans version of a Marks & Spencer food advertisement! Well, the proof of the pudding, they say, is in the eating. After watching Dead Snow, I do feel a little disappointed, that’s not to say it isn’t a good film, it’s just not the perfection I’d expected.

From the outset Dead Snow looks much glossier than the average Zombie film; we follow Sara as she runs terrified through the snow, and is pursued by mysterious dark figures, before too long she is overpowered by them.

Greg McLean’s feature debut, WOLF CREEK is one of the most memorable and disturbing movies in recent years. Made on a relatively small budget of around half a million pounds, the film looks slick and stylish from the start. Containing some truly gut-wrenching scenes along with breathtaking cinematography, this was a film made to leave a lasting impression, and it did.

After a couple of hedonistic weeks of partying and surfing, British backpackers Lizzie (Cassandra Magrath) and Kristy (Kestie Morassi) along with their Aussie Friend Ben (Nathan Phillips), decide to head off in Ben’s old car to a mysterious meteor crater at Wolf Creek.

Oliver Parker’s 2009 film Dorian Gray, adapted from Oscar Wilde’s 1890 classic The Picture of Dorian Gray has no scheduled U.S. release date, so are film fans in the U.S. missing a treat, or is this a blessing in disguise? Starring Ben Barnes as Dorian and Colin Firth as his friend and cohort Henry Wotton, the film tells the story of a young man, who inadvertently makes a pact with the devil. No matter what the devilishly handsome Dorian does, or what kind of life he leads, he will never age. Instead his portrait [which he hides in the attic] will show the true state of Dorian’s soul. I was not expecting much from this film, but curiosity got me to the cinema, and actually, I’m glad it did.

The story starts with Dorian inheriting the family mansion and being thrust into high society life. His friend Henry fancies himself as a real rebel, someone who drinks heavily from the cup of life without any regard for the consequences. Henry encourages Dorian to flout

Sitting down to watch BABYSITTER WANTED, I already knew that I was in for a treat. Having read some very favourable reviews of the film, I was looking forward to a horrifying 87 minutes of pleasure. Was I disappointed? Well, yes - but just a little.

Babysitter Wanted starts with a scene of torture and already I knew the cinematography was great, however, Jonas Barnes and Michael Manasseri relied just as much on sound effects as visual effects, and the balance is spot on. This sets the scene for the whole film, which looks and sounds impressive throughout.

Rob Grant’s 2009 Zombie film YESTERDAY was filmed three years ago in the summer of 2006. It took just 31 days to film. Grant and three of his college graduate friends managed to cobble together the $12,000 Canadian budget to make it. This may be a tiny budget in the movie world, but it was quite a challenge for Grant and his friends. Shot on such a low budget, on 16mm film with an inexperienced crew, the team worked tirelessly after school to edit and finish the film, this could have been a total waste of time, but with great screenwriting and plenty of enthusiastic actors Yesterday is actually not bad at all. Grant tells me he could be on the brink of landing a distribution deal, and I hope he’s right, because this film deserves more than the few festival screenings it’s had so far.

The fourth in the FINAL DESTINATION series, THE FINAL DESTINATION has one major difference to its three predecessors; it’s also available in 3D. Don’t expect this to make a world of difference though, the 3D is good, but I’ve seen it done better. THE FINAL DESTINATION follows exactly the same formula as the others, and it’s an entertaining way to spend an hour and a half, but assuming this is the last one (which would be a foolish assumption) they certainly didn’t save the best ‘til last.

Recently released on Region 2 DVD, with no sign of a region 1 release, HUSH is a nerve shredding journey of kidnap and horror. In spite of the fact that the lead character makes some strange choices which will have you yelling at the screen in frustration, Hush is a good, entertaining, and brutal journey.

Filmed in my home county of Yorkshire, England, Hush follows a young couple, Beth (Christine Bottomley) and Zakes (William Ash) on a motorway trip. Zakes has the job of changing the posters in the service stations, but more challenging than his boring job is his relationship with Beth, which appears to be hanging by a thread. They start bickering almost immediately and the argument gets more heated when Zakes sees a naked girl screaming in the back

Pascal Laugier’s disturbing, brutal, French horror movie is not always comfortable to watch, but in contrast to the other recent torture-porn films, the torture in MARTYRS has a point.

Roadkill 2 (2008) - Film Review

Well, what can I say?! ROADKILL 2 (U.S.A. Joy Ride 2) had all the promise of an exciting and enjoyable watch, but could it possibly live up to its predecessor? Sadly the answer is a very resounding NO! The acting is weak, the characters annoying, and the pace far too slow. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad film, but it’s not that great either.

Melissa (Nicki Aycox), Bobby (Nick Zano) and Melissa’s sister Kayla (Laura Jordan) set off for Las Vegas to enjoy Melissa and Bobby’s Bachelor and Bachelorette parties and it promises to be a fun filled trip. On the way Kayla picks up her boyfriend, Nik (Kyle Schmid) whom she met online. Nik persuades the group to take a detour, and after running into car trouble they head off on foot in search of help.

John Dahl’s 2001 film ROADKILL (U.S. Joy Ride) is a strange mixture of humour, suspense, terror, and thrills. With a perfect blend of likeable and believable characters trying to outrun a vengeful villain, this film makes for perfect viewing.

When Lewis Thomas (Paul Walker) sets off from Colorado to New Jersey with the plan to pick up his friend Venna (Leelee Sobieski) on the way, he has no idea what is in store. After a detour to bail out his older Brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) from prison, Fuller decides to install a C. B radio in Lewis’ car, this is a decision they would both regret. I couldn’t help but laugh along as the boys

You owe me! I sat and endured over 80 minutes of THE ZOMBIE DIARIES so I could warn the rest of you not to bother! The cover of the DVD is misleading in that it has Zombies on it! There are hardly any Zombies in The Zombie Diaries, and the few that are there are not scary. The problems with this film aren’t anything to do with the low budget, there are a good many excellent films made on a low budget. Unfortunately The Zombie Diaries isn’t one of them.

Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of George A. Romero’s classic Zombie film DAWN OF THE DEAD is a perfect example of a remake that should never have been. Whilst Snyder’s film is O.K. it does not hold the same charm as the original.

Choosing to abandon Romero’s idea of staggering, slow moving Zombies in favour of much scarier, faster ones was the wrong choice. I do enjoy films with the quicker Zombies, but it’s clear that the human race wouldn’t stand a cat in Hell’s chance against such an invasion. Whereas with the Romero style staggering corpses, we’d have a fighting chance, and for me, that makes it fun!

George A Romero’s sequel to Night of the Living Dead, DAWN OF THE DEAD is one of my favourite films of all time. It is the perfect mix of action, gore and humour. Not as dark as Night of the Living Dead, the sequel is more light-hearted, some would say silly, but it does totally rock!

Opening with the news of the dead coming back to life being broadcast from a newsroom, the newsroom staff are finding the news they’re reporting hard to handle, well, you would wouldn’t you? Zombies have taken over, and the outlook is bleak.

With a name like TRAILER PARK OF TERROR I was certain Steven Goldmann’s 2008 horror was going to be a diabolical shambles. I figured I’d sit through it anyway, so I could warn you good people to use your precious time on other things, because, well, that’s the kind of selfless gal I am! The thing is though, this isn’t the stinker I thought it’d be, it isn’t brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, but this over-the-top outlandish horror is surprisingly entertaining.

Dee Snider’s STRANGELAND 2: DISCIPLE is scheduled for production later this year, some eleven years after the first STRANGELAND was released on DVD. Dee Snider has been fighting the courts to claim back his creative rights over the movie, after the original production company Shooting Gallery had all of its material seized by the government. Finally, this year, he won and is promising us a sequel much more shocking and terrifying than the first, but is it really a case of better late than never? I revisited the original to review it, knowing that the release of the sequel would spark a new interest.

Firstly, I have a confession to make, and I may as well just come out with it: I’m the world’s biggest Dee Snider fan. I love the guy.

Christopher Smith’s British, comedy, horror, SEVERANCE, is advertised as THE OFFICE meets DELIVERANCE. I’m not really a fan of this mix of genres, as it’s almost impossible to get the mix right, the comedy dilutes the horror and vice versa. So as I expected SEVERANCE is not as funny as THE OFFICE and not as scary as DELIVERANCE, but it still manages to entertain.

Opening the festival will be a rare screening of The Keep, Michael Mann’s 1983 film adaptation of F. Paul Wilsons’ novel about a Nazi occupation of a European castle that unearths terrifying evil. A very fitting start to the festival proceedings as it was filmed in Wales.

The next British horror festival to look out for is THE BRAM STOKER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL which takes place from the 16th to the 19th October. Set in the beautiful coastal town of Whitby, which originally inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula story, this festival is set to become as big, if not bigger than FRIGHTFEST. Scheduled to screen over 50 films, including lots of UK, and several World premieres, THE BRAM STOKER FESTIVAL would like, if they may, to take you on a strange journey……

Once you have been greeted by their 666Gorefest and Sin City Girls, you can enjoy the opening night celebrations, which begin with a fantastic Burlesque cabaret show, and will include TRANSYLVANIA presenting THE MOCKY HORROR SHOW, which is sure to be a blast…..after all, who doesn’t want to do The Time Warp again?!

Phil Claydon’s comedy/horror, LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS was released on region 2 DVD this week, with no sign of a region 1 release. Mathew Horne and James Corden, fresh from their roles in Gavin & Stacey star as luckless losers Jimmy and Fletch. Having read many reviews of this film, most of them not favourable, I was intrigued enough to take a look for myself. I was expecting to be gravely disappointed, but much to my surprise Lesbian Vampire Killers was actually not that bad. The title suggests that there will be horror, sex and laughs, and to some degree we get all three, but not in equal measure.

The B-movie style opening credits were a nice touch and an early sign (if the title hadn’t given the game away already) that this film

James Watkins’ EDEN LAKE won Empire’s Best Horror Award 2009, and was also nominated for their Best British Film Award. The film has some fine, young, British actors performing brilliantly as the threatening teenagers, most notably Jack O’Connell [ring leader Brett], Finn Atkins [Paige] and Thomas Turgoose [whom the London Critics’ Circle awarded their Young British Performer of the Year award to, for his excellent portrayal of young Cooper].
